ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) — A former police officer has been convicted of a moving violation causing death in a crash that killed a woman trying to cross a southwestern Michigan road.
The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports Eugene Anderson was convicted by a jury Thursday. He faces up to a year in jail when sentenced.
Authorities say Anderson was responding to a domestic disturbance report about 9 p.m. on Sept. 20 when 48-year-old Kimberly Bedford was struck by his patrol car. The car was traveling about 65 mph in a 35 mph zone. Anderson was later fired as a Benton Township officer.
Anderson denied wrongdoing and said he’d been railroaded.
Anderson’s lawyer, Martin Kirk, called witnesses who said that Bedford was drunk and was walking in the road with no regard for traffic.
