KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A man visiting from overseas has been hospitalized with critical injuries, after he was hit by a car on one of West Michigan’s busiest streets.

Kent County Sheriff’s Deputies closed a section of 28th Street near the Cascade Meijer following a crash involving a pedestrian Thursday evening.

It happened just after 9:00 p.m. Deputies say that Guoyong Xu,  a 37-year-old man from Beijing, was walking with a friend in the travel lane of 28th Street when he was hit by a car.

Xu was taken to Spectrum Butterworth with critical, life-threatening injuries. His family is flying from China to visit him.

The other person walking with Xu was not hit.

Xu was in Grand Rapids for a business conference in Grand Rapids.

The preliminary investigation reveals the driver may not have seen the two people walking in the road. There were no injuries reported for the driver.
