KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — Investigators said they have exhumed the body of a woman buried in North Carolina after receiving new information suggesting her 2012 death in Kalamazoo might be suspicious.
Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas confirmed to FOX 17 his team traveled to Rowan County, North Carolina, last week to exhume the body of Evelyn Weeks from Westlawn Memorial Park.
Weeks, who was 73 when she died, was the mother of former Sons of Malta president Joseph Weeks, who is currently out on bond after being charged with embezzling from a charity closely associated with the motorcycle club.
Evelyn Weeks died unexpectedly at her home in Kalamazoo on Sept. 9, 2012, according to her obituary. Joseph Weeks was living with her at the time of her death, according to Matyas.
An autopsy was never performed due to her age and health.
But Matyas told FOX 17 that Joseph Weeks has since admitted to Kalamazoo County deputies he stole medications while working as an EMT prior to his mother’s death. Investigators were later given information suggesting Weeks’ mother had been killed with a concoction of stolen medication.
A Western Michigan University forensics team is now slated to perform an autopsy to determine as exact cause of death.
Matyas said no suspects have officially been named and no arrests have been made in connection to Evelyn Weeks’ death.
Joseph Weeks is out on bond following charges he embezzled from the EZ Memorial Ride, which is organized annually by the Sons of Malta motorcycle club to raise money for the family of KDPS Officer Eric Zapata, who was killed in the line of duty. Prior to the accusations, Weeks had served as the club’s president.
