Aquinas buzzer beater nets top play on ‘SportsCenter’

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Kail Venema was in the situation every kid dreams of on a basketball court: time running out, your team down one, and the ball is in your hands. So what did he do with the game on the line?

He passed.

"Get the ball to Jake. That's what's going through my head," Kail laughed on Thursday as he relived Aquinas College's 62-60 upset win over NAIA second-ranked and defending national champion Cornerstone on Wednesday night.

That pass from the senior forward went to junior guard Jake Bullock -- who drilled a 40-footer from near mid-court as time expired. FOX 17's video of the play found its way to ESPN afterwards -- and the shot ended up being the number one play in the Top 10 on "SportsCenter."

ESPN's anchors had a little fun with the highlight -- at Bullock's expense.

During the first broadcast of the play, John Buccigross exclaimed that Bullock "looks like he's a freshman in high school!"

On the late edition of "SportsCenter," host Scott Van Pelt described the sleeves Bullock wears on both arms and legs as "full-on pajamas."

"That's good fun," Jake said Thursday. "It's always great to hear those things -- makes you laugh."

Even greater? Getting to 5-0 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with Wednesday's victory.

"I'm just happy we got the win. That's a great team. In-conference, at their gym, returning national champions from last year."
