GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Police said a body was found inside a duplex after a fire Sunday morning.

The fire happened in the 1400 block  of Madison Avenue SE just before 5:30 a.m. First responders said they saw smoke coming from the windows of the second floor apartment, and were alerted by the home’s occupants there might have been someone left inside.

Once inside, firefighters found a man’s body on the first floor.

Authorities suspect the man is a homeless individual. The residents told police they allowed him to spend the night on occasion. Currently, it’s unclear how he died.

The investigation into the cause of the fire and the man’s death are underway. Fire officials believe the fire started in the living area of the first floor, though that is to be confirmed.

The home is no longer livable due to the damage, according to investigators.
