WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A vehicle driven by a 20-year-old Dowagiac man who fell asleep at the wheel was submerged in water after hitting a guard rail early Sunday morning.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Department said the man was traveling west on M-62 and fell asleep while driving around 1 AM. He drove off the road and into a guard rail, sending him down an embankment before landing in the Dowagiac Mill Pond. The man was able to escape his car through the sun roof and swim to shore.
He was taken to Dowagiac Lee Borgess Hospital for his injuries. Authorities say that a seat belt was worn during the crash and that alcohol is not a factor.
The crash remains under investigation.
