Whitecaps win Eastern Division Championship

LANSING, Mich. -- The West Michigan Whitecaps are Midwest League Eastern Division champions for the first time since 2007 after winning game 3 against the Lugnuts in Lansing, 14-5 in the best-of-three Eastern Division Finals Monday night.

The Whitecaps battled back three times from early deficits before a three-run fifth inning gave West Michigan a 6-4 lead. The Whitecaps scored the final nine runs of the game and compiled 22 total hits for the game.

The Whitecaps advance to face the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a best-of-five Midwest League Championship series. Game one is Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game 2 will be the same time Thursday before the final three games in Cedar Rapids on September 19-21.
