MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Charges are pending against a teen who walked into Muskegon Heights Public School Academy with a sawed-off shotgun on Wednesday, according to Muskegon County Assistant Prosecutor Tim Maat.
The 17-year-old man from the Muskegon area entered the building just before noon Sept. 9 after he was let in by a current student who was waiting at the entrance to go home early, the superintendent of Muskegon Heights Public School Academy told FOX 17.
No one was hurt. It’s unclear what the suspect’s intentions were when he entered the school.
Charges were still pending against the man as of Thursday afternoon because prosecutors were waiting on the warrant to be signed, but Maat said he was expected to appear in court for arraignment before the end of the day.
The suspect is a former student at the academy who’s “been in trouble” in the past, which is why school officials quickly recognized him and called the police, according to Muskegon Heights Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross.
Zackery-Ross said school officials were never aware the teen had a weapon on him and called police as a precaution. She said she only learned the teen had a shot gun after reading published reports of the teen’s arrest Thursday afternoon.
The teen was out on bond for a previous incident involving an assault of a police officer causing injury, and for having a suspended license, Maat confirmed to FOX 17.
The teen’s name is not being released by authorities until a warrant is signed.
