Former NBA star Darryl Dawkins dead at 58

Darryl Dawkins, a former NBA star famous for his backboard-shattering dunks, has died at the age of 58, the NBA announced Thursday.

Dawkins was drafted in 1975 by the Philadelphia 76ers, retired from the NBA in 1989 and went on to play with the Harlem Globetrotters, according to TMZ.

Dawkins shattered two backboards in 1979 while performing his famous “monster dunks,” TMZ reports.

His cause of death has not been released.
