VERGENNES TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- One person was killed and another person injured and taken to the hospital in a crash in the Lowell area at the intersection of Vergennes Street and Alden Nash Avenue.

Police on the scene tell FOX 17 that an off-duty Grand Rapids police officer found the car on the side of Vergennes SE.  The Ford Taurus had been traveling west, when it left the road and hit a tree.

The passenger, 24-year-old year old Kristina Garza, from Lowell, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver, 22-year-old Brian Welch, of Lowell, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Vergennes Street was quickly closed by arriving officers west of Lincoln Lake Avenue. Vergennes is a well-travelled two-lane blacktop. Lowell High School is just west of the crash scene.
