Man who led Ingham deputy on fatal chase sentenced

LANSING, Mich. – The  man who led police on a high speed chase where an Ingham County deputy died in a crash has been sentenced.

John Kelsey, 34, was sentenced to 20-45 years in prison for Fleeing & Eluding, 1st degree.  He was also ordered to pay over $50,000 to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department and the deputy’s family.

Ingham County deputy Grant Whitaker, 25, died in the chase when his cruiser left the road and hit a tree.  Whitaker said that he himself was traveling 100 miles per hour during the chase.

The chase happened on December 7, 2014 on  Dexter Trail east of M-52 in Stockbridge.  Kelsey was arrested on December 12 after several tips were called in to investigators.
