BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Binder Park Zoo is the new home for three new cheetahs.
Katie, Madison and Mohini are 18-months-old and came from the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The three will live together in the Wild Africa exhibit, according to the zoo.
Binder Park Zoo has had cheetahs since 1987 and have several cubs born at the zoo.
According to the zoo, cheetahs were once prevalent throughout much of Africa and Asia but are now facing danger of becoming extinct. Their population at one time flourished, but due to loss of habitat, misunderstanding by farmers and poaching, it is estimated that today there are only 10,000 left in the wild; a number that has dwindled from 100,000 in the 1900’s.
