70 homes, 3 churches, 12 businesses seriously damaged in Portland

PORTLAND, Mich. -- Grand River Avenue was closed off due to extensive damage following the tornado Monday,

Officials said 70 homes, three churches and a dozen businesses sustained serious damage.  On Tuesday, assessing the damage continues and officials will determine how much it will cost.

"In concert with the city officials and the county officials we have declared locally a state of emergency," said Portland City Manager Tutt Gorman.

Portland's mayor, Jim Barnes  said the electrical system is underground and hoped to have power back up and running Monday night.

"The Red Cross wants to make sure everyone has food, clothing and shelter to meet their immediate needs, said Michael Mitchell of the Red Cross.
