Distress call leads to multiple agency response near South Haven

VAN BUREN COUNTY – A distress call to the U.S. Coast Guard led to a multiple agency response on Lake Michigan near South Haven on Wednesday, though authorities say nothing was located.

Authorities with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office say the Coast Guard received a mayday call from a vessel or aircraft approximately three to four south of the South Haven pier, approximately one mile off the shore of Covert Township around 8:06 p.m.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, Covert Fire Department, South Haven Area Emergency Services Fire & Rescue, Covert Police, Covert Fire, and South Haven Police responded to the call.

The Allegan County Marine Division and the Berrien County Marine Division conducted the search of the area along with the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard advised assisting agencies they could disregard any additional search in the described area at approximately 11:00 p.m.
