EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Officers safely disposed of a military grenade after a woman holding an estate sale found it amongst her stuff for sale Friday.
Roxanne Scott was holding a sale following the death of her father this past October when she opened a drawer and made the discovery. She called Emmett Township Public Safety, who responded to the home in the 20 block of Maxwell Ave. around 10:23 a.m.
Officers said the woman’s father, Roy L. Dorey, was an army veteran- thus providing some explanation as to the possible origins of the un-exploded grenade.
Scott reportedly picked up the device right after finding it in garage drawer and quickly placed it back inside. Officials blocked nearby streets and evacuated the area. Battle Creek Police Department’s Bomb Squad assisted in removing the grenade.
A detective wore a bomb suit while entering the building and carrying the explosive out of the home. It was then placed in a bomb disposal container and transported to Fort Custer to be destroyed.
