CHARLEVOIX, Mich. — A Charlevoix County Sheriff is recovering after being shot Saturday in Boyne Valley Township.
Deputy Fred Hasty was reportedly making a stop on a suspect thought to be involved in a stolen vehicle incident when the suspect began firing at Hasty and other deputies just after 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
Charlevoix County Sheriff Don Schneider told Fox 17 on Sunday that Deputy Hasty had undergone a two-hour surgery to repair damage resulting from his wounds. He said that while the wounds were not life-threatening, they was extensive, and Hasty will take several months to fully recover.
Sheriff Schneider acknowledged the outpouring of support from fellow law enforcement officers and the community at large.
Michigan State Police continue to investigate the incident.
