16-year-old girl killed in Kent County crash

K FairchildALTO, Mich. -- A teenage girl is dead after police say she failed to yield the right-of-way at an intersection and was broadsided by a pickup truck.

The crash happened on Sunday afternoon at the intersection of 92nd Street SE and Morse Lake Road in Bowne Township.

According to the Kent County Sheriff's Department, Katherine Fairchild, 16, was traveling southbound on Morse Lake in a Chrysler sedan when she was struck by a Ford pickup truck that was westbound on 92nd Street.

Fairchild was trapped inside the car.  When crews got her out, she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and later died.

The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured.  Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

On Monday, Caledonia Community Schools issued a statement that said, in part:

Katie was a beautiful young lady who was full of life and always had a positive attitude. She was an outstanding academic student throughout her school career in Caledonia.  Katie was a leader amongst her peers as she participated in many activities in Caledonia schools including Odyssey of the Mind, Duncan Lake Student Council, and National Junior Honor Society.  She was recently inducted into the National Honor Society.
