Charges filed against boater found 6 days after disappearing

CASS COUNTY – A Cass County man who was found on a pier after he’d been missing for 6 days is now facing charges.

Prosecutors authorized two counts of 2nd Degree Home Invasion and two counts of Larceny from a Building against Kurt DeYoung this week following the incident on Diamond Lake earlier this month.

DeYoung, 46, was first reported missing by authorities on April 13 after the pontoon boat he’d taken out on Diamond Lake washed ashore without DeYoung.

Investigators learned the last time anyone had seen DeYoung was April 8, when he’d taken the boat out on the lake to go fishing and never returned.

Authorities would later learn from DeYoung he’d apparently been working on the motor on the back of the boat when he fell overboard, later making it on to an island on Diamond Lake where he was located on April 14.

Authorities had searched the island on Diamond Lake for DeYoung prior to finding him on April 14.

The charges filed against DeYoung are said to have taken place between the day he was last seen and the day he was found on the island.

Authorities say the maximum penalty for DeYoung if he’s convicted is 15 years and/or a $3,000 fine.

DeYoung was arraigned on the charges today after a warrant was issued on Wednesday.
