HOLLAND, Mich. – A family is temporarily without a place to stay after a child playing with a lighter allegedly started a fire and caused significant damage to their home Saturday, fire officials say.
First responders were dispatched to a the 2500 block of Lilac Ave. on reports of a house on fire just after 11:40 a.m. Saturday. They arrived on scene to find the single story home with black smoke billowing out the back of the residence.
Park Township Fire Chief told Fox 17 that it appeared the fire had been started as a result of a child playing with a lighter. The fire was allegedly sparked in a back bedroom and started to spread. While crews were able to contain the flames to a small area around the bedroom, significant smoke damage inside will apparently make the home unlivable for the time being.
No one was injured during the incident.
The Red Cross was on scene to offer assistance to the displaced family.
