HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. -- An Amtrak train on Monday collided with a truck on the tracks in Halifax County, North Carolina.
According to WTVR, a tractor-trailer was struck on the tracks near U.S. Highway 301.
"I saw a tractor trailer trying to make a right; he couldn’t do it," eyewitness Leslie Cipriani told WTVR. "That’s when I heard the train coming. The crossing bar got caught on the truck. One person got out of the truck."
There were 212 passengers and eight crew members on board, an Amtrak spokeswoman told WTVR. Preliminary reports from the North Carolina Department of Transportation indicate that 40 people have been transported to the hospital with injuries.
The Amtrak spokeswoman told WTVR that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening at this time.
