WALKER, Mich.–Matthew Brunn has now been formally arraigned in Walker District Court, and charged in connection with the murder of 81-year-old Casey Wybenga, who was known throughout the Grand Rapids area for his kindness to the homeless and those in need.

Brunn was arrested after he was beaten up in a drug house in Detroit, and was transported back to West Michigan on Monday. As FOX 17 reported earlier this week, during questioning 29-year-old Brunn confessed to police that he killed Wybenga at the America’s Best Value Inn and Suites just off Alpine Avenue in Walker.

In a probable cause affidavit on file in court, police say Brunn confessed to strangling Wybenga on or about December 29-30. Brunn was last seen with the 81-year-old a few hours prior to his death, and had been seen driving his vehicle and using his ATM card.

Friday morning, Brunn was charged with Homicide Open Murder, and Habitual Offender. He is due back in court January 20 for a probable cause hearing, and January 30 for his preliminary exam.
