GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Representatives from the Grand Rapids Police Department are planning to attend the funeral this weekend of NYPD officer Wenjian Liu, who was recently shot and killed while sitting in his patrol car.

Liu and his partner Officer Rafael Ramos were sitting in their patrol car when both were shot in the head and killed ambush-style on Dec. 20.

Officer David Siver and Lt. Michael Maycroft from the department’s Honor Guard will be attending, along with Lt. Patrick Dean, who is from New York City and served with the NYPD for seven years before coming to Grand Rapids in the 1990s. Dean still has several family members living in New York.

Travel expenses are being paid for through a Jet Blue promotional program which is covering the costs of airfare for officers nationwide who wish to attend the funeral.

GRPD Detective David Gillem attended the funeral for Officer Ramos on Dec. 27.
