DETROIT, Mich -- Jon Wassink accounted for all four touchdowns as South Christian beat Lansing Sexton (13-1), 28-27, to claim the division 4 state championship.
Sexton had the ball in the closing seconds near midfield when they spiked the football on a 4th and two play and the Sailors celebrated their 2nd state title in 3 years.
Sexton struck on it's opening possesion, but Wassink countered with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Veenstra, he then intercepted a Big Reds pass and hit Sam Heyboer on a 41-yard score for a 14-7 lead.
After Sexton tied the game with 42 seconds to play in the 2nd quarter, Wassink again went to work leading the Sailors on a 3-play scoring drive capped by a 20-yard strike to Eric VanVoorst for a 20-14 halftime lead.
Wassink then ran 68-yards for a touchdown on the first play of the 3rd quarter to give South it's biggest at 28-14. Sexton scored a pair of touchdowns, but missed an extra point with 10:39 to play in the game.
Wassink ran the ball for 122 yards and and threw for another 179. He finishes his high school career with 34 wins as a starting quarterback.
