GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — For some it’s a chance to have a hot meal and find a sense of normalcy on Thanksgiving. For others it’s an opportunity to follow their faith and serve those in need.
“It” is the Great Thanksgiving Banquet presented by Mel Trotter Ministries.
Mel Trotter staff members have been working for weeks to get the ingredients ready and prepare the room at DeVos Place, and today they’ll be joined by over 700 community volunteers and more than 2000 guests for a family-style meal.
So how much food is needed for an event this big? 1,500 lbs of turkey, 1,260 lbs of mashed potatoes, 50 gallons of gravy, over 200 gallons of coffee and 500 pies. This year’s meal is sponsored by Meijer, though it would not be possible without community support.
Volunteer spots are filled for 2014, but anyone is welcome to attend the banquet which begins at 11am.
