KENT COUNTY, Mich. -- With heavy snowfall and windy conditions in west Michigan, ambulance drivers and EMT's are also out in the elements.

FOX 17 rode along with Marv Raap with Life EMS on Monday evening. Raap said that safety is always their top priority, and even they make sure to slow down in the snow.

You never know when an emergency might happen at your house, so emergency responders said that it’s important you keep your driveway and walkways shoveled. This allows for them to easily access your house if needed in an emergency.

Life EMS also said that for the elderly, try not to go outside to get your mail or the newspaper until after the weather clears to avoid an injury from falling down.

“Fog, wind, rain, snow -- the weather is huge. Those are all big things that can affect our response," said Raap. "We wear reflective vests, however the big thing is as state law states, get as far over, at least a lane over from where there is either the ambulance or the police car, fire truck is or a wrecker. Get as far over into the opposite lane as you can.  Slow down, and don't worry about what's going on in the accident. Keep your eyes on the road."

Life EMS also said that area road commissions do a great job plowing the streets so they can access homes in the winter.

As for other drivers on the road, Raap said to make sure to slow down, give yourself extra space to stop and allow yourself more time to travel to your planned destination.
