KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A 19-year-old is facing a murder charge in connection with a March 2013 birthday party shooting.
According to Grand Rapids Police, Jamal Devonta Bennett is currently serving a sentence for perjury in connection with this shooting, but will now be arraigned on open murder and felony firearms charges.
Bennett is accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Derecko Martin March 16, 2013 at a birthday party in the 3200 block of Marshall Ave. SE.
Another person was injured in that shooting but has since recovered, according to a press release.
Police say several other associates of Bennett have been charged with perjury in connection with the shooting.
