KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. -- Roughly 80,000 people voted for who they want to win Kalamazoo County's state senate seat, according to county records.

The race for the 20th district was a very tight. Candidate Margaret O'Brien (R) leads Sean McCann (D) by 60 votes, according to county clerk Tim Snow.

Both are current state representatives, and both garnered more than 36,000 votes.

A third candidate, former state rep. and libertarian Lorence Wenke, garnered close to 7,300 votes.

The county board of canvassers started verifying results on Wednesday afternoon. Snow said county canvassers are made up of two democrats and two republicans.

County canvassers have up to 14 days to certify results, according to Snow. The county will then send the results to the state board of canvassers for their certification. If there is no recount, Snow said the whole process should take less than 3 weeks.

Representatives at the canvassers' meeting for McCann and O'Brien declined to comment.
