I-96 lane closures are done, but weekend road work will slow traffic elsewhere

LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Concrete repairs on I-96 east of M-50 Alden Nash Avenue were finished early, and the Michigan Department of Transportation says the work is done. All lanes were opened before 2 p.m. Thursday.

That means significant relief for drivers on that stretch of highway, which saw long backups eastbound and westbound. The westbound backup caught several semi drivers off guard on Wednesday, and two separate crashes seriously hurt one driver and closed the highway for hours.

Meanwhile, weekend road work will cause lane closures at a number of highways:

I-196

  • Westbound lane closures from 8th Avenue to the 22nd Avenue bridge just past M-6
  • Extended through September 19

M-37 Broadmoor Avenue

  • Northbound and southbound lane closures between 44th Street and 60th Street
  • Friday 7 p.m. to Sunday 5 p.m., September 5-7

M-44 Northland Drive

  • Northbound and southbound lane closures from Plainfield Avenue to Belding Road
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Monday morning, September 8

Fulton Street, Grand Rapids

  • Fulton Street closed over the Grand River
  • Friday 9 a.m. to Monday 6 a.m., September 5-8

Leonard Street, Grand Rapids

  • Lane closures between Alpine Avenue and Powers Avenue
  • Through Monday, 8 p.m., September 8

And here’s a heads-up for Monday:

Alpine Avenue M-37

  • Northbound and southbound between 3 Mile Road and Alpenhorn Drive
  • Right lane closures from September 8 – October 24
