SOUTH BEND, Ind. — With his mother in attendance, Wynton Bernard got a base hit in the seventh inning of today’s Whitecaps-Silver Hawks game to become the Whitecaps single-season hits leader.
The base hit was No. 159 on the season for Bernard, surpassing current Detroit Tiger Nick Castellanos and Whitecaps Hall of famer Robert Fick in the record book. The Whitecaps ended up losing the game 6-3 in 11 innings.
Bernard’s mother had driven from San Diego to join Wynton in West Michigan on Monday and followed him to South Bend. She will stay in South Bend for the rest of the series before driving back to San Diego.
Bernard spoke with FOX 17 about the relief he felt when he finally broke the record today.
