COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — For the second time in less than a week, a West Michigan Whitecaps pitcher is being promoted.
All-Star reliever Joe Mantiply has been called up to the Erie Seawolves, according to a tweet from former Whitecap Buck Farmer. Farmer was promoted the Detroit Tigers’ Double-A affiliate on July 31.
“Shoutout to my boy @TheRealTheseus (Mantiply) for getting called up to AA @erie_seawolves much deserved!” Farmer tweeted just after 10:30 Monday night.
Mantiply, a 27th-round pick by Detroit in 2013, is 6-3 with a 2.40 E.R.A. in 38 appearances this season. In 71.1 innings of work, the Virginia Tech grad has surrendered just 57 hits and 19 earned runs, while striking out 76 batters.
In his final outing with the Whitecaps on Monday, Mantiply gave up one hit and an earned run in 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
