KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — Consumers Energy plans to install smart meters in Kalamazoo County beginning in 2015.
During Tuesday night’s Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners meeting, Consumers’ Dennis McKee explained the smart meter technology that he said the company expects to install locally beginning in the middle of next year.
McKee said Consumers has accelerated plans to install 2.4 million new electric and natural gas smart meters statewide by 2017.
The smart meters allow the company to receive customer use information directly from a communication chip and eliminate the need for physical meter readings.
Customers also will be able to check their own electric use information online, set their own billing dates and help forecast their monthly bills.
