MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — The neighbor of a Muskegon Heights woman who was shot and killed is speaking out.

Sarah Kale said sirens and emergency responders swarming into the Mona Lake Mobile Homes Park where she lives grabbed her attention Friday night. She said when she came outside she noticed her neighbor’s boyfriend in the back of a police car. Within minutes, she learned that the woman who lived inside lot 26, Sandra Detty, was found shot to death.

“[It’s] sad and kind of scary,” Kale said. “I haven’t heard nothing happen–has happened like this and it was a shock, ya know.”

The man Kale said was Detty’s boyfriend, Tom Kerbuski Jr., is the same man police arrested and charged with murder.

“She just kept to herself, I mean she would walk around with her boyfriend but just kept to herself,” Kale said. “I was over next door to her neighbor’s house and he [Kerbuski] would come out and say hi to the kids and [he was] just nice.”

Kale said she never heard the couple arguing or noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Police aren’t releasing any further details regarding the shooting including what led up to it.

Kerburski is being held at the Muskegon County Jail.
