Free “Chefs at the Market” Demonstrations In July

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (July 2, 2014) — You can go to the Downtown Market; you can buy the ingredients. But when it comes to coming up with actually making it all come together, perhaps you are stuck.

Every Saturday through July, the Downtown Market, 435 Ionia Ave. SW, you can learn wonderful techniques using fresh ingredients found right on the spot from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Outdoor Market Terrace.

Below is the schedule provided by the Grand Rapids Downtown Market:

• July 5: Jacob Bandstra, Downtown Market
Independence day at the Market – Jacob will demonstrate how to create dishes for your summer holiday weekend get-togethers with fresh and local ingredients found at the Market!

• July 12: Torrence O’Haire, The Starving Artist and The Full Moon Supper Club
La Bouillabase: How to keep your fishmonger happy – Chef Torrence O’Haire, demonstrates a proper Bouillabaisse a la Marseille – a heartfelt traditional meal from the south of France. The chef will use products from the market’s own fishmonger and discuss how to transform them into one of the most respected forms of old French gastronomy, as well as give tips on throwing a “Bouillabaisse party.”

• July 19: Abby Therrien, Terra GR:
Beet the heat – A variety of techniques including roasting, smoking, and pickling as well as recipes for soups, salads, and even a refreshing beverage will be included in this demo, all using the best local ingredients from Michigan.

• July 26: Chef Terri Rees
Sensational summer salads – Salads don’t have to be boring. Chef Terri Rees will prepare a fresh watermelon and feta salad with a freshly made vinaigrette, followed by a grain-free tabouli “knock off” featuring quinoa, fresh herbs and tomatoes.
