BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (June 12, 2014) – Investigators in Battle Creek were on the scene of a house fire that turned deadly Thursday morning.  The following information is from the Battle Creek Police Department:

On 6-12-2014 at about 11:00 am, Battle Creek Police and Battle Creek Fire responded, along with Life Care Ambulance, to an address in the first block of S. 27th St in the city of Battle Creek. Upon arrival it was discovered that there was a fire in a bedroom. An 83 yr old male resident of the house was found deceased inside. It appears that the fire started on the mattress in that bedroom. The deceased resident did have severe burns on his torso.

The incident remains under investigation by Fire inspectors from both the Police and Fire Departments. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Battle Creek Police Dept. or the Battle Creek Fire Dept.

Sgt. Ken Millikin
Battle Creek Police Dept.

Friends of the victim tell FOX 17 that the victim, 83-year-old Louis Ryason lived at the home in the first block of S. 27th St. by himself with his two cats. They also said that the power was out in the neighborhood the night before and could possible lead Mr. Ryason to read by candlelight, which could have caused the fire.
