KENT COUNTY, Mich. (June 5, 2014) — Kyle Wilson, 23, received a minimum sentence of 46 years for murdering Brandon Nelson, 33. He received a maximum sentence of 150 years.
The murder conviction came last month after a jury trial in Kent County Circuit Court.
Wilson and Nelson were cousins. The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said the two lived together at York Creek Apartments in Comstock Park, where the violent crime took place in September 2013.
This is Wilson’s second trip to prison. In 2007, he took a plea deal and received a manslaughter conviction for stabbing 15-year-old Jordon Nink to death.
During Thursday’s sentencing for Nelson’s murder, Wilson addressed the court.
Wilson said, “It hurts a lot that this happened, and I wish I could go back to take back and change the way things happened. Not for my sake but just for everyone else’s sake involved with Brandon.”
Leigh Zeedyke, Nelson’s girlfriend read a statement in court saying, “Brandon and I had a future together. Two days before his death, he gave me a promise ring to secure that future.”
“No one was there the day I found Brandon faced down on the floor his body shattered into pieces and no one was there when I had to explain to my 7 and 4 year old why they couldn’t see and love Brandon ever again,” she continued.
