FORT WAYNE, Ind. (June 1, 2014) — The West Michigan Whitecaps blew a 5-0 lead in a Saturday loss. On Sunday, the blew through a franchise record.
The Whitecaps defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 19-1 at Parkview Field on Sunday afternoon. The 18-run difference is the largest margin of victory in franchise history. West Michigan also established a new franchise mark for extra-base hits with 10, four of which were home runs, and are now 2.5 games behind South Bend for first place in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division.
The Whitecaps (32-25) also lead Dayton by three games for the first-half wild card position. West Michigan has 13 games remaining in the first half of the season.
Jeff Holm (1), Austin Schotts (1), Raph Rhymes (4), and Willy Adames (2) each hit home runs for the Whitecaps today. Holm had five RBI’s, while Rhymes and Adames each knocked in four runs. Schotts went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI’s and scoring three runs of his own from the leadoff spot. He’s now hitting .409 through five games this season.
Jon Maciel gave up one run in six innings of work to improve to 3-2 on the season. Maciel struck out eight without issuing a walk and scattered five hits. Matt Davenport pitched the final three innings for the Whitecaps.
West Michigan and Fort Wayne will meet in the rubber match of the series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Kevin Ziomek (3-5, 2.34 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Whitecaps.
