DETROIT (May 22, 2014) — With his new team visiting his old team, Prince Fielder was busy visiting a doctor and considering an end to his season.
The Detroit Tigers began a four-game set with the Texas Rangers today. It is the first meeting between the two clubs since an offseason trade saw Prince Fielder head to Texas and Ian Kinsler go to Detroit.
Fielder did not travel with the Rangers to Detroit. Instead he was visiting a spine specialist in Dallas, and according to the Star-Telegram’s Jeff Wilson, could end up having season-ending surgery. According to Wilson, Fielder has a herniated disc in his neck that is pinched and causing weakness in Fielder’s left arm. The only remedy for that is surgery and Fielder is “seriously considering” that option.
So far the trade has been working well for the Tigers. Kinsler came into today’s game hitting .317 with 4 home runs and 20 runs batted in as the Tigers everyday second baseman. Fielder, meanwhile, is hitting just .247 with three home runs and 16 RBIs and hasn’t played since Friday.
