PRINCETON, NJ — A new Princeton study suggests that Facebook will lose 80 percent of its peak user base between 2015 and 2017.

The study uses the model of diseases to predict the life cycle of the popular social media site.

“Disease models can be used to understand the mass adoption and subsequent flight from online social networks, researchers at Princeton’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering say in a study released Jan. 17,” writes Sam Frizell in TIME.

Princeton’s model, which has not been peer-reviewed, suggests more Facebook users will simply lose interest over time as more and more of their peers stop using the site.
