WEST MICHIGAN– There are speeches, music and marches scheduled around West Michigan Monday to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Grand Rapids Community College will hold its traditional Community Peace March, which will leave Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse, 111 Lyon Street NE at 12 noon. GRCC is also hosting an event inside Ford Fieldhouse from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Chuck D, co-founder of the rap group Public Enemy, will speak, and there will be live music by the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The event is free and open to the public.
A march is scheduled to begin in Kalamazoo at 3:30 p.m. at the flagpole of Western Michigan University’s Kanley Chapel. The march will end at Martin Luther King Park at about 4:30 p.m.
Though there is no school in Muskegon Monday, an honorary celebration will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Muskegon High School,according to the Muskegon Chronicle. Student winners of a contest will read their inspirational essays and there will also be live music.
