MDOT: Fall Safety Tips

MDOT Deals With Budget LimitsLANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to adapt to changing light patterns that accompany the end of daylight saving time, which occurs this year on Sunday, Nov. 3. Fewer hours of daylight may make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, bicyclists and school children walking and playing outdoors. Sun glare also presents a safety challenge this time of year. When you’re behind the wheel, be aware you may need to adjust to different morning and/or late afternoon glare from the autumn sun. Keeping a pair of sunglasses handy in your vehicle will help shield your vision.”While the weather may still be nice enough to lure pedestrians and bicyclists outdoors, motorists need to be extra careful to compensate for the abrupt change in the amount of daylight during the days following the time change,” said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. “We want everyone using the roads to be safe this fall.”

MDOT also reminds motorists to stay alert in active construction zones and refrain from speeding or distracted driving when behind the wheel. The department has posted tips for safe fall driving on the Roads & Travel section of the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/mdot.
