GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — A Northwest side apartment fire destroyed six units and everything inside as residents scrambled to get out safe.

Shortly after 5:00 am crews were called to 961 Bridge St. NW and when they arrived the building was fully involved. All occupants of the apartments got out safe before crews battled the blaze.  According to Grand Rapids Fire Department, the fire started in one of the kitchens on the first floor.

One of the residents, Lydia Ross,  is 31 weeks pregnant and lost everything.

“All my pictures and clothes and things I just bought for my baby are gone”, Ross said.

Enter Shiela Lopez, who saw Lydia’s story on FOX 17’s morning show.

Shiela lost her home to a fire 20 years ago, and wanted to help Ross any way she could.

“I just want you to have some of these things for your baby”, she told Ross, who tearfully thanked her.

The Red Cross is providing housing and food for the six displaced families and investigators are looking for a cause.
