MIAMI, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers gave many of their best hitters the day off Sunday for the team’s final game of the regular season.
Henderson Alvarez took advantage.
The 23-year-old Miami Marlins pitcher took just 99 pitches to no-hit the remaining Tigers batters, and a wild pitch from Luke Putkonen scored Giancarlo Stanton in the bottom of the ninth to give the Marlins a 1-0 win.
Miguel Cabrera, Austin Jackson, and Torii Hunter all sat for Detroit, who open their American League Divisional Series against the Oakland Athletics on Friday.
Miami finishes the regular season 62-100 — the worst record in the National League.
