GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — As the 2013 high school football season is set to begin, every team has dreams of finishing the year at Ford Field.
2 teams who did that last season meet in our game of the week as South Chrsitian hosts Grand Rapids Christian and Byron Center’s Waddell Field.
The Eagles will be without star wide receiver Drake Harris who will not play becuase of a hamstring injury. Time to see who will step in Harris’ absence, many look to senior reciever Dwayne Barfield and watch out for senior slot Sammy Kuiper as well.
2 new players to the GRC program figure to also contribute. Quarterback Tyler Sigler came over from Jenison and running back Dominic Piaz transfered from Grand Rapids Catholic Central, both will need big debuts if Christian is going to be successful.
South Christian, on the other hand, is happy to welcome back an injured star. Junior quarterback Jon Wassink missed the division 4 state championship win over Detroit Country Day last season after being injured late in the semifinal game. Now, Wassink is healthy and has lots of talent surrounding him, making the Sailors a favorite to repeat in division 4.
Our Blitz Battle features Battle Creek Harper Creek at Mattawan. The Beavers program is in a great place coming off consecutive division 3 semifinal appearences. This year there goal is take the next step and get to Ford Field and leading that charge is senior quarterback Trevor Johnson who returns after starting last season.
Mattawan was a regional finalist last year, pretty significant when you consider where the program was when head coach Matt Stephens took it over before the 2009 season. Now, the Wildcats have to find a way to replace 18 starters from last seasons 10-2 team.
