CALVIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man has accidentally shot his 17-year-old cousin while double-checking to make sure his rifle was clear of bullets.

It happened in Cass County’s Calvin Township on Wednesday at around 8:45 p.m.  The sheriff’s department says 20-year-old Jeremy Faye checked to make sure a 22-caliber rifle was clear of ammunition, and went to set the gun down.  That’s when he mistakenly pulled the trigger, shooting his 17-year-old cousin in the abdomen.

The victim was taken to the hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.

The incident remains under investigation.
