CHARLEVOIX, Mich- More than 300 years after a French ship sank, crews are getting ready to dive into Lake Michigan to see if a wreckage found there is actually Le Griffon.

WPBN reports that The Great Lakes Exploration Group was the organization that discovered that wreckage in the Charlevoix area. Next Friday, crews will go under water to determine whether the sunken ship was the one that went under in 1679.

If the ship is identified as Le Griffon, preservation efforts will begin.

The team doing the dive has some of the nation’s leading scientists and archaeologists on it, some of which actually worked on the Titanic shipwreck.
