HOLLAND, Mich. — Vanderbilt Charter Academy middle school students will spend an hour Friday walking in silence in remembrance of cancer victims.
They will walk from the school grounds to Kollen Park. They have also spent the past week raising money to donate to Relay for Life for cancer research.
Julie Baareman, a teacher at Vanderbilt, is leading the fundraiser and is the daughter of a two-time cancer survivor.
“Watching my mother struggle with her image as a woman was more than my adolescent mind could deal with,” Baareman said in a news release. “But she persevered. She survived.”
The walk will begin at 1 p.m.
