GRPS Teachers Approve Contract

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Education Association approved a contract Monday night after working over 200 days without one.

THis comes just days before the ‘Right To Work’ law is scheduled to go into effect.  This contract extends for two years, meaning union dues will automatically be taken out of paychecks.  If the teachers did not vote to approve the contract, they would have not been able to work an extension into a new contract agreement.

After much back and forth this recent agreement pays for third, fourth and fifth year teachers to take their required continued education courses.  It also gives them the salary schedule increase, but the step increase will freeze many teachers pay.

It has been a long process leaving many teachers just wanting job security.
