WASHINGTON, D.C. — The federal sequester plan that would cut $85 billion in spending on March 1 would include more than $141 million in cuts in the state of Michigan, according to a White House release Sunday night.
Congress has until Friday to come up with another plan to avoid the automatic cuts.
Michigan would be hit hardest in military and education funding in the $141,551,000 worth of cuts. 10,000 of the state’s Department of Defense employees would be furloughed, with total pay getting reduced by almost $68 million.
Primary and secondary education in the state would lose $22 million in funding. That would put the jobs of 300 teachers and aides at risk.
More than $20 million would get cut from the state’s special education programs.
Congress will be back in session on Monday after a week-long recess.
