GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A baby girl was born at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital just four minutes after midnight, making her Grand Rapids’ first baby of 2013.

Mom April Johnson began having contractions at about 10:00 p.m. Monday.

“I felt a big kick, but my water didn’t break,” Johnson said. “She was bouncing around like she normally does, but she was ready to come.”

Two hours later, baby Shakiera arrived at 12:04 a.m. She weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces.

Shakiera beat out two other babies for the first baby of the year title. The other two were born just minutes later.
