GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — An 8-year-old girl was killed and several others were taken to the hospital following a crash Sunday afternoon.

It happened at the intersection of Buchanan Avenue and Hall Street SW in Grand Rapids.

Police say a Ford Explorer ran the red light and struck a Toyota model car that was carrying a family from Detroit.

The driver and the passenger inside the SUV fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind. But police soon caught up with them.

The girl was riding in the Toyota at the time of the crash. Grand Rapids police say a 10-year-old and 4-year-old remain hospitalized.

Both parents as well as another child have been released.

The family was in town over the weekend attending a church conference, police added. The girl and her family were heading back home to Detroit at the time of the crash.

Police tell FOX 17 News they believe alcohol was a factor and the driver of the Ford had been drinking.
